Why does mike huckabee exploit religion so much?

Maybe that is all he has. He knows that a certain segment of the US population will actually base their vote for President on something like religion. It is highly disturbing to see the candidates having a "No I'm more Christian than you" contest. A candidates personal religion should not even be up for discussion.
