Help on Meiosis please?

so i'm revising for my a-levels and the meiosis topic has really got me confused! as humans we have 23 pairs of chromosomes, so 46 chromosomes, and therefore 92 chromatids in total? then how can meiosis occur in two stages. the pairs splitting in half, to form cells with 23 chromosomes, but then those splitting again to form gametes with only 23 chromatids? surely this would cause us to only have 23 chromosomes if we inherited one gamete from each parent? help!
