What is your take on the meaning of the New Testament book of Revelation?

I am fairly sure John wrote this book specifically for the folks he addressed in the beginning of the letter. I little bit of historical study will reveal the meaning of the contents of this book. For centuries now religious illiterates have foolishly tried to fit the meaning of this book into the time frame they live in. Why not study about what the book really meant? Do you really think the author of Revelation would actually send them a book (letter) addressing things that will happen in the long distant future and meant very little to them? I think not. What do you think?
